The National Union: External and internal pressure on the two parties to agree on a candidate for the presidency of Iraq
Shafaq News/ The head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, Harim Kamal Agha, stated on Tuesday that external and internal parties are pressuring his party and the Kurdistan Democratic Party with the aim of overcoming the current stage that Iraq is going through, and proceeding with the formation of the next federal government.
Agha, a member of the leadership of the National Union Party, told the Kurdish-speaking Voice of America radio that "no date has been set for a meeting between the two main parties" in the Kurdistan Region.
He added, "But there is a program or negotiations with other parties that have demands and exert pressure and advise the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party to sit at the dialogue table in order to overcome this stage with a team and a joint representative."
Agha also explained that "these pressures and demands are from our friends, whether from representatives of the United Nations, the United States, Iran and other countries, or from our internal friends within the Shiite house in particular, as well as from the Sunni house. The friends of the Kurds in general have these demands that the two main parties in the region agree during the current stage.
The head of the National Union bloc continued by saying that "the coordination framework asks the Kurds to bypass this stage after Eid al-Adha, and to agree on a candidate for the post of President of the Republic, whether with a joint team or a fork."
Agha noted that "this stage will be critical and the PUK and the KDP should skip it in any way within the framework of the Kurds' interests and sacrifices, and their future demands and rights."
And recently, after the Sadrist movement withdrew from the political process in Iraq and the tripartite alliance contract between the movement, the Kurdistan Democratic Party led by Massoud Barzani, and the “Sovereignty” alliance, which includes most of the Sunni political forces led by Khamis al-Khanjar and Parliament Speaker Muhammad al-Halbousi, the leaders of the Shiite coordination framework threw the ball in the court The Kurds aim to present their candidates for the post of President of the Republic to elect one of them in Parliament in preparation for the formation of the next federal government.
Last February, the Kurdistan Democratic Party announced the candidacy of the region's interior minister, Reber Ahmed, for the presidency of the Iraqi republic.
According to the political custom followed throughout the previous sessions, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan has held the position of President of the Republic since the overthrow of the previous regime in 2003.
But in terms of numbers, the fact that the Kurdistan Democratic Party won 31 parliamentary seats in the recent legislative elections, compared to only 17 seats for the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, may reverse the equation this time.
The Democratic Party says that the Union nominated Saleh for the position without the consent of the rest of the Kurdish forces, which prompted him to put forward a candidate from his side to fill the position.
