The head of the Sabean-Mandaean bloc in the House of Representatives, Osama Al-Badri, announced, on Saturday, that a proposal for the protection of minorities law would be submitted to the Presidency of the House of Representatives, with the aim of legislating it in the upcoming sessions.
Al-Badri said in a press statement, "The draft proposal for the protection of minorities aims to guarantee the rights and protection of minorities," noting that "the law will be submitted to the Presidency of Parliament in order to legislate it in the upcoming sessions."
He explained that "the proposal provides for the establishment of a council similar to the executive consisting of 12 members, including the president, to be run by minorities in Iraq."
Al-Badri pointed out that "the Iraqi constitution did not guarantee the achievement of justice for minorities after 20 years," noting that "representatives of minorities in the House of Representatives are seeking to identify points and methods of its legislation to ensure protection for the components of Iraq guaranteed in the 2005 constitution."
He pointed out that "the law sheds light on important issues in which the rights of minorities are required to be taken into account in a way that guarantees justice and the realization of rights."
