    Economy News - Baghdad
The Technical Undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment, Jassim Al-Falahi, said that water scarcity, lack of its resources, drought, land degradation, desertification, lack of vegetation cover, dust storms and increased temperatures are important factors that directly affect people's lives and health, especially in the southern regions of Iraq.

Al-Falahi added, in an interview with the "Rudaw" network, followed by "Al-Iqtisad News", that "the biggest challenge facing Iraq is the lack of water revenues from the upstream countries," noting that "climate change negatively affects, in particular, those who live on agriculture and animal husbandry in Rural areas".

He went on to say, "I regret to say that there is an increase in desertification in Iraq, and that we are losing lands that were arable," revealing that "58% of the lands that were arable are now desertified or degraded, which greatly affects food security in the country."

Regarding water revenues from neighboring countries, the technical undersecretary of the Ministry of Environment said that 90% of Iraq's water comes across the border, from the Turkish and Iranian sides.

He continued, "There are dams built in these countries with the distortion of rivers, which affected Iraq's water share," noting that "there is a shortage estimated at more than 30% of Iraq's water share, and the lack of a strategic water reserve due to relying on the stock of past years."

Al-Falahi pointed out that "Prime Minister Muhammad Shia'a al-Sudani is making efforts to negotiate with Turkey and Iran in this regard, in order to obtain fair shares of water for Iraq."
