The recent directive of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr, to a group of Sadrist figures not to travel during Ramadan due to the existence of “important matters” related to public affairs, opened the door to speculation and questions about whether al-Sadr is preparing for a move of some kind, especially since the directive coincided with the movements of political forces to pass Amend the election law according to the “St. Lego” system.
Last Wednesday, Muqtada al-Sadr instructed that eight leaders of the Sadrist movement should not travel, and Al-Sadr’s office stated in a statement that “the leader of the Sadrist movement informed the administrative official in Hanana, Mustafa al-Yaqoubi, to inform each of Mahmoud al-Jayashi, Haider al-Jabri, Aoun Al-Nabi, Hassan al-Athari, and Jalil Al-Nouri, Ahmed Al-Mutairi, Kazem Al-Issawi, and Moayad Al-Asadi, not to travel outside Iraq during the blessed month of Ramadan, because there are important matters related to the public and private situation.
Sadrist leaders believe that there is a possible political position on the part of al-Sadr, with the coordination framework insisting on passing the new election law.
The “Coordination Framework” coalition did not express any position regarding these developments, but the leader of the Wisdom Movement in the framework, Ammar al-Hakim, confirmed in a televised interview, yesterday evening, Thursday, that “hearts are open and hands are extended to the chest,” stressing that “there is a historical relationship that was Continuing with Al-Sadr, and that he (Al-Sadr) is a reliable and essential partner in the Iraqi political equation.
Atheel al-Nujaifi, a leader in the State Administration coalition, which includes the “coordinating framework, the Kurdish forces, and the Sovereignty Alliance,” ruled out that al-Sadr would turn the tables on others, and said in a press statement, “Al-Sadr withdrew from Parliament because the situation reached a dead end that cannot be opened. It must be broken, and breaking this door will not be accepted by any party participating in the political process.
The researcher on Iraqi political affairs, Muhannad al-Janabi, did not rule out a political return for al-Sadr. He said in a tweet, "There are signs of a political return of the leader of the Sadrist movement, Muqtada al-Sadr."
The Sadrist movement recorded its first political stance on February 25, after a political absence that lasted for several months, by refusing to amend the election law after independent representatives objected to it, as the prominent leader in the movement, Hakim Al-Zamili, posted a video clip on his official Facebook account. To the representative of the religious authority, Abd al-Mahdi al-Karbalai, and wrote on it, “No to the closed list, not to the single district.”
The Sadrist movement withdrew from the political process on August 29, after its leader, Muqtada al-Sadr, decided to withdraw the deputies of his "Sadrist" bloc from parliament and then retire from political work, after a series of major events that began with demonstrations by supporters of the movement that ended with clashes inside the Green Zone in Baghdad, with Armed factions affiliated with the “Popular Mobilization” Authority.
