On Wednesday, the leader of the National Coalition, Iyad Allawi, expressed his rejection of the return of what he called the dictatorial regime and the monopoly of power in the country, after the State of Jordan granted the “Arab Socialist Baath Party” a license to practice political activity, which angered most of the Shiite political parties in Iraq.
Allawi said in a statement, "Saddam's regime was dictatorial and monopolistic, which called on a vanguard of patriotic Iraqis, including from within the Baath Party and others from outside, to confront the regime at the time because of its repressive policies and abuse of power for suspicious interests and wills that plunged Iraq into bloody internal and external wars, such as the Iran war, then Kuwait and other wars." With the Kurds, the regime also liquidated a large number of national and opposition figures, once again among its victims were important members of the Baath Party at the time, seeking to seize and monopolize power, in addition to trying to split the Arab ranks. At that time, the regime sought reconciliation and brought together points of view between Jordan, led by King Hussein bin Abdullah, may God rest his soul, and the Palestinian brothers. It worked to escalate the dispute between them, claiming that the goal of the moves was to overthrow his regime in Iraq.
He added, “I and others have resisted since his conspiratorial policies drowned us, and we were committed to opposing him during that period in which we made a lot of sacrifices, and I was subjected to an assassination attempt that almost succeeded had it not been for the will of God Almighty. Confiscating the movable and immovable property and money of the Allawi family, targeting my family, young and old, all of this did not discourage us from remaining silent, but rather escalated our work continuously against the regime, and we worked with many national forces and personalities in order to change it from within, and the regime did not leave room for the political forces opposed to the movement because of the extreme oppression And this allowed the intervention of foreign countries to overthrow the regime, as this has become the only way to get rid of that important ruling in the matter that the Iraqi people paid dearly in confronting Saddam’s regime, including the Ba’athists.”
The leader of the National Coalition indicated that “after the fall of the dictatorial regime, a new page is supposed to be launched for Iraq, unifying the people, unleashing their capabilities, seeking the country’s safety, unity and sovereignty, respecting citizenship and the equality of honorable citizens, but the opposite happened, which left Iraq divided and its people in contradiction due to political isolation.” Marginalization, exclusion, and quotas, and the country entered into various struggles and conflicts, at one time a Shia-Shia conflict, at another time a Kurdish-Kurdish conflict, and at a third a Sunni-Sunni conflict, and labels such as minorities and quotas emerged that dominated the name of citizenship that every free and honorable Iraqi believes in, and these policies distanced Iraq from its Arab surroundings. And it allowed countries to blatantly interfere in its internal affairs through cheap and brazen methods.”
And Allawi stated, “Our main goal is to build a democratic Iraq in which all its people enjoy security, stability, and prosperity, and to establish a political system based on the foundations of justice, equality, and the rule of law, and that preserves the rights of citizenship. However, blatant external interference obstructed this national project and stood against it. That is why there is no fear, as some imagine, of recalling the past. The political process is doing what is necessary, unfortunately, and our people revolted against tyranny at that time and will not accept, as some claim, the return of dictatorship as long as it exists, and the alternative to current policies is in the hands of extremism from some forces according to the scientific basis for every action is reaction He did stronger than expected in the opposite direction.
The leader of the National Coalition concluded: “Today, after all the sacrifices we have made, we will remain on our principles, and we will strive with honest national forces and personalities to correct the course and achieve the state of citizenship. We will not allow the return or establishment of any unilateral dictatorial regime. Our loyalty is to Iraq and our goal is to provide a decent life for our free Iraqi people.”
