    Baghdad today - Baghdad
In light of the Sadrist movement’s continued boycott of the political process and its failure to decide its participation in the local elections so far, the “Wataniya” coalition, led by former Iraqi Prime Minister Iyad Allawi, and the “Emtidad” movement, which brings together a number of personalities and civil forces, announced a boycott of the scheduled local elections. It will take place on December 18 next.
    4 reasons to boycott
In a statement dedicated to "Baghdad Today", political analyst Adnan Muhammad Al-Tamimi confirmed, today, Thursday (August 24, 2023), that there are 4 reasons behind the parties boycotting the upcoming December elections.
Al-Tamimi said, "The boycott by several political parties, alliances, and currents of the provincial elections to be held next December is not surprising, especially with the large objections to the election law, which reduced the competitiveness of small parties and independents in competing with the big powers, which brought matters back to square one." .
    "black money"
He added, "4 main reasons behind the boycott, which will increase with the approach of the elections, the most prominent of which is the "black money", referring to the political money that specific parties possess because of the economic offices they have that provided them with money that is used for electoral gain in the absence of any spending determinants. .
He pointed out that "among the reasons is also the influence of some forces and their penetration into government institutions to the extent that they can be assigned to the file of services."
    Fear of failure
Al-Tamimi continued, "Some forces realize that they have reached the end, and that their participation may be an indication of their failure in the political track, especially with the repeated failures and their distance from the popular bases."
He pointed out that "the forces whose participation was suspended have a modest presence in the political scene, which means that their influence will not be significant."
With the participation of 50 political alliances
The Commission announced, earlier, the participation of 50 electoral alliances in the local elections, 33 of which are new alliances.
These will be the first local elections to be held in Iraq since April 2013, as the elected provincial councils assume the task of selecting the governor and the provincial executives, and have the powers to dismiss, appoint and approve the project plan according to the financial budget allocated to the province from the central government in Baghdad, according to the Iraqi constitution.
