    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Sunday (November 5, 2023), the Parliamentary Security and Defense Committee commented on the need for Iraq to sign security agreements with Gulf countries, similar to the agreement recently signed with Iran.
Committee member Mustafa Al-Warshan told Baghdad Al-Youm, “Iraq has security agreements with all neighboring countries, not just Iran, and they relate to security coordination, exchanging information, preserving borders, and coordinating positions. Iraq also has agreements and treaties with Gulf countries and others in this regard.”
Al-Warshan said, “Iraq needs updated security agreements according to developments in the region and the world, not only on the security level, but also on the commercial, economic, and investment levels, and there is government interest in this matter, and Iraq signed a very important security agreement some time ago with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and it can be repeated.” This is with the rest of the Gulf countries.”
Earlier, Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim Al-Araji said that the joint security agreement between his country and Iran achieved results that had not been achieved between the two countries since 1991.
He stressed, "The Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani, is closely following the path of implementing this agreement, and that Iraq is keen on Iran's security, and will not allow its territory to be a starting point for destabilizing the security of any neighboring country."
He pointed out that the Iraqi side informed the Iranians of "the stages of work carried out by Iraq in the area that was identified, which was occupied by the Iranian opposition, and which were all evacuated."
He explained, "The Iranian opposition members in Iraqi Kurdistan were disarmed and their areas were evacuated according to the agreement, and Iraqi federal forces were deployed there and placed far from the border."
Last August, Iran announced that it had reached an agreement with Iraq to disarm opposition groups opposed to Tehran and transfer them from the autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan region, to be done by mid-September.
