    Alsumaria News-Politics

Today, Sunday, the Parliamentary Planning Committee presented a road map for the work of the House of Representatives during the coming days after the end of the legislative recess and the appointment of Tuesday, January 9, as the first day of the new legislative term, while revealing the mechanism for choosing a new speaker of Parliament.

Deputy Chairman of the Parliamentary Planning Committee, Muhammad Al-Baldawi, told Al-Sumaria News, “The work of the parliamentary committees was continuing during the ending legislative recess, noting that “the recess only means stopping the legislation of laws, but the oversight work was continuing.”

He explained, "It is expected that the sessions will resume after January 9, and it is expected that there will be an extraordinary session starting on Tuesday to discuss the American attacks on Baghdad, Babylon, and the rest of the provinces, which violated Iraqi sovereignty."

He stated that "the legislative chapter will include a group of important laws, especially the oil and gas law, which is now in the negotiation stage between the political blocs, the regional government, and the federal government," noting that "the civil service law is also one of the laws included in Parliament's list of tasks, as it is one of the important laws in addition to the rest of the laws." And legislation related to security services and international treaties and agreements.”

He explained, "This coincides with also moving forward with oversight work within the institution, such as convening committees and hosting ministers to find out what has been accomplished in the past period."

Regarding the position of Speaker of Parliament instead of Muhammad Al-Halbousi, he considered that “it is assumed that the position of Speaker of the Council must be decided first and be in the first session according to the law,” noting that “the discussions resulted during the last period in 3 names proposed by the political forces and we are waiting for the political forces to agree on them.” Hold a session dedicated to that and proceed with electing a speaker for the House of Representatives.”

He stated that "the political agreement is related to putting forward 3 names and one name is chosen within Parliament. If it is not decided in the first round, it will be decided in the second round through voting, and the other parties concede to whoever gets the highest votes."

Parliament had followed this procedure in 2018 to elect the President of the Republic when Barham Salih and Fouad Hussein were competing for the position of President of the Republic without there being an agreement between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union on a single candidate.
