The leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Hoshyar Zebari, criticized the government platforms’ request for citizens’ opinions via phone messages.
Zebari said in a post on the X platform, “The fact that some government platforms ask citizens by phone to give their opinion regarding whether or not the international coalition forces, especially the American ones, remain in the country is a heresy.”
Zebari stressed, “These decisions are sovereign, governmental, legal, and contain international obligations. They cannot be subjected to populist and conciliatory polls. Let us act as a state.”
The federal government asked its citizens to express their opinion about the international coalition forces remaining in the country.
During the last two days, a large number of Iraqis received a question via an SMS message on their mobile phones, which read: “Dear citizen... Do you support the continuation of the international coalition’s mission in Iraq?” A link was added to the text of the message to answer the question.
This short message prepared an opinion poll that the Baghdad government was considering, to reveal general trends in the country regarding the foreign military presence there.
Although the text of the message states that “its source is the Iraqi Center for Opinion Measurement,” its link leads to the “Ur” government platform for electronic services.
The survey came at the height of the crisis in relations between Baghdad and the United States of America, which leads the coalition forces, as it recently launched a series of attacks on sites and leading figures in the armed factions, in response to the attacks carried out by the latter against sites and camps where American forces are located in Iraq and Syria, in solidarity. With Gaza.
In light of the crisis situation, after the Iraqi government renewed its commitment to the withdrawal of international coalition forces from the country, and the Pentagon announced that there are currently no plans for such a step, the government requested the opinions of citizens.
It is noteworthy that after the American strike that targeted the headquarters of the Popular Mobilization Forces, east of the capital, Baghdad, last Thursday, killing two leaders in the Al-Nujaba Movement, the Iraqi government renewed its commitment to the withdrawal of international coalition forces from the country.
