    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Kurdish politician Latif Al-Sheikh confirmed today, Monday (January 29, 2024), that the region has declined at the level of regional and international relations, expressing his surprise at the region’s tendency to open new consulates in foreign countries.
The Sheikh said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “until recently, the Kurdistan region represented a priority for regional countries and even major countries, and any foreign official who visits Iraq must visit the region.”
He added, "The special representations in the Kurdistan region have failed to improve the region's foreign relations, and there appears to be a decline in support for Kurdistan from the international community."
He pointed out that "talking about increasing the number of representations abroad is incomprehensible, as the current representations have failed, and improving relations with foreign countries is achieved through concrete measures within the region that improve reputation externally."
Yesterday, Sunday, the Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, announced that his government intends to raise the level of its diplomatic representation in a number of countries that he described as “friendly and important.”
This came in a speech he delivered during the launch of the third annual conference of representatives of the Kurdistan Regional Government, held in the city of Erbil, which continues for five days.
Masrour Barzani said in his speech, “What is pleasing is that the Kurdistan Region’s foreign and international relations in the past years have developed and grown a lot,” adding that “the number of consuls and diplomatic missions in the Kurdistan Region is increasing and expanding.”
He added, "Our future program includes increasing the number of representations of the Kurdistan Regional Government abroad, and in several friendly and important countries that have consuls in the region, with the aim of further consolidating friendship, and economic, cultural, scientific and academic relations."
