Minister of Commerce: The food basket prevented a rise in the prices of basic materials, even during the month of Ramadan

Trade Minister Atheer Daoud Al-Ghurairi confirmed that the food basket prevented a rise in the prices of basic materials even during the month of Ramadan, and while he indicated the presence of a strategic grain reserve estimated at two million tons of grains in the warehouses, he expected stability in food prices in the coming month of Ramadan.
Al-Ghurairi said that “the ministry’s primary goal is to restore the citizen’s confidence in it and the services it provides to them,” stressing that “the ministry is responsible for the country’s internal and external trade policy in accordance with Iraq’s economic policy.”
He pointed out that “the ministry’s goal is to join the World Trade Organization,” noting that “it was part of the government program and the ministerial curriculum to file Iraq’s accession to the World Trade Organization and return it as an observer in the organization.”
He explained that “there are requirements and conditions that Iraq must implement to join the global organization, and the basis of the transformation is the orientation towards the private sector and its development,” noting that “Iraq’s accession to the international organization places it within the global system by providing support and keeping pace with international industries.”
He pointed out that “the government program stressed that the private sector will be a key partner in the Iraqi economy, and there will be great support for the private sector,” adding: “We issued the comprehensive commodity structure of imports and exports, which will serve as a road map to support the private sector.”
He stressed that “the Ministry supports and encourages Iraqi industries in cooperation with other ministries,” noting that “the Ministry works to achieve food security.”
He continued: “We have a strategic reserve estimated at two million tons of grain in the ministry’s stores,” stressing that “the ministry was able, through the food basket, to achieve food security.”
He pointed out that “Iraq was not included in the global statistics for countries suffering from inflation in food prices,” noting that “the ministry’s strategic reserves are sufficient for several months.”
He went on to say: “The ration consists of 7 items, compared to 12 items for those covered by social welfare,” indicating that “more than 7 million citizens are included in the food basket from the social welfare category.”
Regarding the prices of foodstuffs in the markets, the minister stated that “there are no significant differences in the prices of basic materials in the market, as the Ministry monitors the prices of foodstuffs in local markets daily,” explaining that “the Ministry had several sources for manipulators of food prices in the markets.”
He continued: “We expect stability in prices in the coming month of Ramadan, as large quantities of food will be pumped into the markets ahead of the holy month.”
Regarding the ration card, the minister indicated that “about 600,000 ration cards were withheld from those who were not eligible after updating the electronic data, as it was found that there were more than 200,000 deceased people and more than 200,000 travelers receiving a ration ration,” stressing that “updating the data will be via an electronic application.” Within the Ministry’s program to facilitate procedures.
