    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Friday (March 15, 2024), Director General of the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company, Ali Qais, confirmed that Iraq seeks to compete with other companies and own the largest and best tankers in the region.
Qais said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “we aspire to compete with companies in the region in terms of owning the largest tankers,” noting that “the first stage has ended with us in terms of owning Sumer Waked and four other tankers,” adding, “But Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul-Ghani Al-Sawad He directed the need for the company to return to its previous era of owning the largest and best tankers in the region, because Iraq seeks in the future to be self-sufficient in petroleum products after the opening of the Karbala refinery, the northern refinery, and the fourth unit in the southern refineries, in addition to other refinery projects. Within two years, Iraq may be a source of these products, which makes us need to own Tankers.”
Qais added, “The Minister of Oil provided all facilities for the company’s work and gave its management full support to be one of the leading companies in the offshore oil sector after it lost its fleet in the wars of the previous regime,” pointing out “his company’s intention to proceed with the ownership partnership contract for tankers with major international companies.” .
He stressed that "contracts may go through leasing these ships from companies to operate in Iraq, and after years they will be owned without paying any amounts for purchase."
On Monday (March 11, 2024), Oil Minister Hayan Abdul-Ghani announced the inauguration of the sea tanker (AKKD), stressing the ministry’s keenness to strengthen the national carrier fleet represented by the Iraqi Oil Tanker Company with new tankers.
Abdul Ghani said, in a speech during the inauguration ceremony of the new tanker, according to a statement by the ministry, “We stand here today in the port of Khor Al-Zubair to celebrate once again the inauguration of the tanker (AKKD) after the inauguration of the tanker (Sumer) earlier, as the tonnage of the new tanker is (32) 1000 tons, designated for transporting petroleum products, with a length of (184) meters and a width of (32) metres, and a contract was made with a specialized Norwegian international company for this purpose.”
He pointed out, "This comes within the plans of the Ministry of Oil to strengthen and develop the role of the national carrier in transporting crude oil and petroleum products to countries around the world, and that the Ministry is studying the method of partnership with specialized international tanker companies to implement joint commercial transportation projects."
