    Alsumaria News - Exclusive

It is hoped that the Iraqi-Gulf electrical interconnection with Kuwait will be completed by the end of this year, so that Iraq will obtain 500 megawatts of electricity, while Alsumaria News conducted a statistical review of the total Iraqi electrical interconnection contracts with neighboring countries, and the value of what these interconnection operations provide, which it is hoped Neighborhood connections should constitute 10% of the total electrical energy in Iraq.

Iraqi Minister of Electricity, Ziad Ali Fadel, said that Baghdad will complete the connection with the Kuwaiti electricity network by the end of 2024 and will begin obtaining 500 megawatts of electricity, indicating that the connection with Kuwait is currently 45% complete.

The 500 megawatts that will be obtained from Kuwait represents 2% of the total electrical energy produced by Iraq, which amounts to 22 thousand megawatts, and is sufficient to supply electricity to 166 thousand homes and families.

The total number of Iraqi electrical interconnection projects with neighboring countries amounts to more than 3,650 megawatts, some of which are completed and others not finished yet, as Al-Sumaria News conducts an inventory of the total electrical interconnection projects.

The first Iraqi electrical interconnection project with neighboring countries was implemented with Iran during the period between 2004 and 2011, and its capacity is 1,500 megawatts.

The second project, which is the connection with Jordan, was started in late 2022, and it is hoped that it will be operated soon with a capacity of 150 megawatts, and then it can rise to 900 megawatts in the future.

As for the third project, it is the connection with Turkey, with a capacity of 500 megawatts. It was started in early 2022 and the line was completed, but the prices and contract details have not been finalized.

The fourth project is the electrical interconnection with the Gulf Cooperation Council and via Kuwait, with a capacity of 500 megawatts. It is hoped that it will be operational by the end of this year, and it is possible that the final capacity will reach 1,800 megawatts.

The fifth connection is with Saudi Arabia, with a capacity of one thousand megawatts. The project was started in mid-2023, and it is not known when it will end.

While the total number of electrical connection projects is 3,650 megawatts, it is hoped that it will rise to about 6,000 megawatts in the future. This means that electrical connection projects will constitute approximately 10% of the total electrical energy produced by Iraq.
