The chief researcher on national security issues at the New America Foundation, Douglas Oliphant, confirmed that the Iraqi Prime Minister’s visit to Washington came at a “very important” time.
This came in an interview on Kurdistan 24, during which he said that there was an opportunity for the Sudanese to meet with high-level American officials to confirm that Iraq is a strong country and constitutes unity between Iran, the United States, and the West.
Oliphant pointed out that the Prime Minister of the Federal Government has a desire to normalize relations between Iraq and the United States, after they were limited to the military side, and sometimes the oil side.
Meanwhile, the chief researcher on national security issues pointed out that Al-Sudani “enjoys a good reputation in his country. Shiites and Sunnis are satisfied with him, and he is also warmly welcomed in the United States.”
He said: The United States wants relations to be good between Erbil and Baghdad. Stressing that the American ambassador to Iraq has always played a role in bringing the two sides closer together.
On Saturday, April 13, 2024, Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani began his visit to the American capital, Washington, in a delicate and sensitive circumstance at the level of bilateral relations and the situation in the region.
Before leaving Baghdad, Al-Sudani said in a press conference, “The goal of the visit is to move relations with the United States to a new stage, which includes activating the provisions of the Strategic Framework Agreement.”
He stressed that he will discuss with US President Joe Biden the circumstances of the region and the escalation it is witnessing, and the joint role in working to calm the situation and prevent the conflict from expanding in a way that affects stability.
He also pointed out that his visit will include “discussing the work of the Supreme Military Committee between Iraq and the international coalition, to reach a timetable for ending the coalition’s mission and moving to bilateral relations with the countries participating in the coalition.”
The Federal Prime Minister indicated that “the visit will witness meetings with the US Secretaries of State, Defense and Treasury, the National Security Advisor, the US Chamber of Commerce and senior officials in oil and industrial companies.”
