Baghdad/Al-Masala Al-Hadath: Iraqis are still pinning hopes on the arrest of those involved in the theft of the century.
New hope arises in achieving justice after a source stated that “the central committee responsible for investigating the theft of the century in the Diyala Governorate Office issued an arrest warrant against an employee on suspicion of his connection to the matter, bringing the list of wanted names to nine people so far.” But that is not enough.
Before the theft of the century in Diyala, there was the theft of tax money in Baghdad.
In Diyala Governorate, a major theft known as the “theft of the century” was revealed, as about 9 billion Iraqi dinars disappeared from compensation funds allocated to victims of terrorism.
This theft was carried out by a group of employees who forged official documents and withdrew money over a period of several months. The theft was discovered after auditing and matching the accounts, which led to the opening of a high-level investigation to pursue the perpetrators.
After this relatively long period of time, no quick and urgent measures were taken to retaliate for the theft of public money.
Billions of dinars disappeared from the compensation account for those affected by terrorism in Diyala at the hands of corrupt people, just as happened with tax money.
The “Theft of the Century” is known as one of the largest corruption operations in Iraq’s history, with approximately $2.5 billion in public tax funds stolen between September 2021 and August 2022¹². Investigations are continuing, and there are efforts to recover the stolen funds and hold those responsible accountable, but they are taking place slowly.
There are growing suspicions about collusion between those involved in the theft of the century and some influential parties, which leads to the covering up of a lot of information and documents related to the case.
This servanthood complicates investigation efforts and impedes justice, as those involved enjoy protection from influential figures in the government and the private sector.
This protection includes obstructing investigations, concealing evidence, and influencing witnesses.
Under these circumstances, it becomes difficult for the relevant authorities to reach the full truth and recover the stolen money.
Popular demands are increasing for the need to take firm measures against corruption, and to ensure that those involved do not escape punishment.
