Parliament: The cosmetic market is thriving and the government stops “intruders”

The cosmetic medicine sector has witnessed widespread popularity over the past years, which has made it coveted for the entry of “outsiders” into the profession, driven by the increasing societal demand, both women and men.
A member of the Parliamentary Health and Environment Committee, Majed Shankali, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “Today we suffer from the problem of the exaggerated spread of cosmetic clinics, some of which escape oversight,” adding that “there is a clear direction from the Ministry to regulate the work of cosmetics, in addition to reducing Interactions in the work of many specialties, even medical ones.”
Shankali pointed out that “a wide range of controls will be included in the application as part of plans to prevent interactions between the work of dentists and plastic surgeons, and the Medical Syndicate has begun to follow up through the Discipline and Inspection Committee,” pointing to “the focus on establishing controls that allow eliminating these interactions between the work of different specialties.” ".
Cosmetic surgeries are not without risk, which requires careful specialists, as medical errors led to the loss of one patient’s life during a plastic surgery to sculpt the body. This incident was repeated more than once in the capital, Baghdad, and in well-known private hospitals.
Social researcher Wali Al-Khafaji attributed the recent spread of the cosmetic phenomenon to “women’s focus on beautification more than men, given that societies tend towards women’s interest in their beauty and elegance, and for this reason some women opt for additions to their facial features.”
Al-Khafaji told “Al-Sabah”: “Among the important reasons is imitation of fashions, as most human behavior depends on imitation in terms of imitating celebrities and others, in addition to the factor of feeling inferior, which has a major role in some people resorting to plastic surgery, in addition to the aspect of upbringing.” Social behavior and the desire to be the subject of attention.
The social researcher added, “This case has widespread social harm, in addition to its violation of medical advice and warnings about toxins and deformities,” noting that “some medical errors occur due to lack of experience and intruders to the profession other than doctors and surgeons, until it came to the point of establishing such operations from Before barbers and educational institutes.”
