The Parliamentary Agriculture Committee revealed, today, Thursday, a two-way plan to confront desertification, rising temperatures and dust storms in recent years in Iraq, considering that Iraq needs 10 million trees to eliminate desertification.

Committee member Ibtisam Al Hilali said in a statement toAlsumaria News, that "[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]It is one of the five countries that have been exposed to climate change due to desertification and high temperatures, leading to the drying up of large areas of agricultural land.

Al-Hilali added, “Confronting this desertification is done through two aspects, the first of which is planting trees around the Iraqi governorates and creating a green belt that protects them from dust storms and heat waves,” noting that “the governorates are in the process of planting 5 million trees, at a time when they need…[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]To about 10 million trees to eliminate desertification."

The committee member continued, "The second part is to distribute lands to farmers to cultivate them through supportMinistry of Water Resources"With everything the farmer needs to cultivate this land," she said, indicating that "these steps are very important to reduce desertification and rising temperatures."

Recognizing that the negative impacts of sand and dust storms at various levels are issues of international concern, the United Nations General Assembly declared 12 July as the International Day for Combating Sand and Dust Storms.

According to the United Nations, sand and dust storms represent a major and widespread challenge to sustainable development efforts in their economic, social and environmental dimensions. They have become a global concern in recent decades due to their significant impacts on the environment, health, agriculture, livelihoods, and socio-economic well-being. Sand and dust storms are an essential component of the Earth’s natural biogeochemical cycles, but they are also partly the result of human-induced drivers, including climate change, unsustainable land management, and water waste.
