    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Member of Parliament Sahra Abdullah revealed, today, Wednesday (July 31, 2024), a parliamentary movement to cancel and zero out fees on solar energy systems in Iraq, with the aim of creating a qualitative alternative to electricity.
Abdullah said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "With the peak of summer, the electricity crises that sweep the cities and cause material damage, especially to professionals, not to mention their psychological consequences on millions of residents with temperatures approaching 50 degrees Celsius."
She added, "Solar energy has become a realistic and objective solution and can be transformed into a positive phenomenon in Iraq because it is clean energy and reduces air pollution. It also lasts for long periods of time and the atmosphere encourages the momentum of production in addition to the fact that it encourages the purchase of devices that do not consume more energy."
Abdullah explained that "despite the positives of solar energy, it is expensive, which is what prompted her to submit a request to the Legal Committee to cancel and zero out the fees incurred on importing solar energy systems with all their tools and to seek to reduce prices as much as possible, especially since they have proven efficient in dealing with the Iraqi climate and creating a qualitative alternative to electricity that will reduce the pressure on the national system."
The 43 million people of oil-rich Iraq, which is suffering from the effects of climate change, live with daily power outages that can last up to ten hours, and the situation is made worse by temperatures that reach 50 degrees during the summer. In a move to ease the pressure on the national grid, the Central Bank of Iraq announced a few years ago the allocation of one trillion dinars (about $750 million) to secure subsidized loans to the private sector, including homes and private companies, to encourage residents to install solar energy systems.
