    Baghdad Today - Baghdad
Member of Parliament Ali Al-Lami revealed, today, Thursday (August 1, 2024), three facts related to the Basra-Aqaba oil pipeline project.
Al-Lami said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "The most important fact that the public opinion in Iraq must realize is that there is no project to extend an oil pipeline from the Basra fields to Aqaba, but rather to the Haditha region in the west of the country and from there to Nineveh at the present time, noting that" the pipeline will pass through several governorates, including Dhi Qar and Diwaniyah, and 4 giant refineries will be built with giant tanks to store oil for use in the event of an emergency, meaning that it is of internal benefit in order to get rid of imports.
He pointed out that "the project will be in line with the development path and this is a very important link in the possibility of using it to export discoveries and some industries related to oil, whether raw materials or petrochemicals, stressing that the project was proposed during the time of the previous regime and was revived again after 2003, and it was even proposed as an investment opportunity during the time of the Abadi government, but it was not implemented due to its high financial cost."
Al-Lami explained that "the cost of the project was 28 billion dollars and was reduced to 6 billion dollars by the government, noting that it has many advantages and the fallacies being spread that Israel can benefit from it are far from reality because SOMO is the company concerned with selling the oil and is committed to government procedures."
The member of the House of Representatives pointed out that "Iraq currently has a sea outlet for exporting oil, and its capacity does not exceed 3 million barrels per day, while the Ceyhan pipeline is outdated and faces many problems, indicating that in the future a pipeline can be extended to the port of Aqaba in order to diversify export outlets, and it is a strategic option for delivering oil to global markets, but what is currently available is the extension of a pipeline that is beneficial within Iraq."
The Iraqi Ministry of Oil announced in April 2022 that the cost of the Basra-Aqaba pipeline is $8.5 billion, most of which will be borne by the company that will invest in it. It also indicated that "the construction of the line has received the support of all successive governments in Iraq since 2012, and its designs have been complete since 2015."
The ministry confirmed that the project aims to export one million barrels of Iraqi crude oil to the Jordanian port of Aqaba on the Red Sea, in an attempt to diversify Iraq's current export outlets, other than the ports of Basra on the Gulf waters, and the Iraqi pipeline that connects to the Turkish port of Ceyhan.
The project includes extending a 1,665-kilometre pipeline from the Basra fields in the far south of Iraq to the Jordanian port of Aqaba, with an initial export capacity of one million barrels per day. Iraq also grants the Jordanian side the right to buy 150,000 barrels per day at a price reduced from global oil prices.
