[rtl]Thousands of homes in France were without power for the second day in a row.[/rtl]
[rtl]Severe storms hit the central region early Tuesday evening (July 30, 2024), leaving thousands of homes without electricity.[/rtl]
[rtl]Thousands of homes in the central region and Burgundy, which were also affected by violent storms on Wednesday morning (July 31, 2024), were without power, according to Enedis, the operator of France's electricity distribution network.[/rtl]
[rtl]No injuries had been reported as of early Wednesday morning, and the severe weather events had not led to residents being relocated.[/rtl]

    [rtl]Power outage in France[/rtl]

[rtl]Thousands of homes were without electricity in France and rapid transit trains were disrupted in the central region on Tuesday evening, July 30, after violent storms, according to Enedis and the French national railway company (SNCF).[/rtl]
[rtl]“Following the storms that affected the central region, a power outage occurred in the very high voltage network operated by the electricity transmission network operator RTE near Blois at 8:00 p.m. (local time), leaving 23,000 customers without electricity at the height of the incident,” Enedis said.[/rtl]
[rtl]The company also indicated that electricity was restored to more than 50% of homes at 10:00 p.m., thanks to remote maneuvers carried out by the company on the distribution network.[/rtl]
[rtl]Power restoration operations continued until late, and Enedis and RTE teams were mobilized “to limit the impact of this incident and restore power as quickly as possible to the remaining customers.[/rtl]
[rtl]According to Enedis, "less than 10,000 households" remained affected by the power outage in France after 11:00 p.m., according to information obtained by the specialized energy platform, citing the French-language television channel BFMTV.[/rtl]
[rtl]The storms also disrupted train traffic between Tours and Blois "after a power outage in the Limeray sector" due to "violent storms that swept the sector", according to the French National Railway Company (SNCF), with "two trains" on the track coming to a halt "shortly after 8:00 p.m." following the failure.[/rtl]

[rtl]The electricity crisis continues in France[/rtl]

    [size]
[rtl]Enedis announced that the power outage crisis in France continued today, Wednesday (July 31, 2024); as "there were 2,500 customers still needing to restore electricity supply, at 10:30 a.m., in the central region."[/rtl]
[rtl]In Burgundy, 5,000 customers were without power, with 3,600 customers restored via remote manoeuvres earlier this morning.”[/rtl]
[rtl]"Enedis teams, reinforced by teams from service providers, have been mobilised since Tuesday evening and are on the ground to inspect the affected areas and carry out repair work to restore power as quickly as possible to the customers concerned," the company said.[/rtl]
[rtl]The heavy rains accompanying these storms particularly affected the Yonne River, causing the southeastern railway line between Paris and Lyon to stop on Wednesday morning, which could affect 80,000 passengers, according to the French National Railway Company.[/rtl]
[rtl]Flooding has been reported in the eastern Seine-Maritime department, according to updates seen by the energy platform.[/rtl]
[rtl]France's weather service Météo-France placed 12 departments on orange alert for storms on Tuesday, which led in particular to the closure of several "fan zones" in the Paris region, where the Olympic Games are being held, according to the French-language platform Connaissance Des Energies.[/rtl]

[rtl]Algerian oil and gas supplies at risk[/rtl]

    [size]
[rtl]The power outage crisis in France came as questions were raised about the extent to which Algerian oil and gas supplies to France would be affected, following the decision to withdraw the ambassador from Paris, against the backdrop of the latter’s recognition of Morocco’s autonomy over Western Sahara.[/rtl]
[rtl]Figures from the Washington-based Energy Research Unit showed that France is the leading recipient of Algerian oil and liquefied gas, which are witnessing a rise as the countries of the Old Continent move away from Russian fuel, with Moscow’s invasion of Ukrainian territory.[/rtl]
[rtl]This problem between the two countries coincides with the rise in gas and electricity prices in France since the beginning of this year (2024), and with the current tension that may have greater negative repercussions on prices if Algeria decides to stop oil and gas supplies.[/rtl]
[rtl]Sources told the specialized energy platform that Algeria is studying all possible measures regarding cooperation with France in the energy sector after the step of withdrawing the ambassador.[/rtl]
[rtl]The sources added: "All decisions related to escalation and stopping oil and gas exports to France are available, and we are studying everything carefully and without haste."[/rtl]
[rtl]For its part, the Ministry of Energy, nor the Algerian oil and gas company Sonatrach, did not respond to requests for comment sent by Energy Platform.[/rtl][/size]
