    Baghdad Today - Erbil
Today, Saturday (August 3, 2024), the Director General of Kurdistan Customs, Saman Abdul Rahman, responded to the accusations directed at the region’s ports of smuggling contraband and the existence of unofficial ports, indicating that the doors are open to the oversight committees to verify this.
Abdul Rahman said in an interview with Baghdad Today that "his directorate will not respond to political accusations, and its doors are open to any oversight committee, and there are permanent visits by delegations from the federal government to all the region's ports."
He added, "There are no unofficial outlets in the region, and there is absolutely no smuggling of prohibited materials, and all these accusations are absolutely untrue."
He pointed out that "all revenues from border crossings in the Kurdistan Region go to the Ministry of Finance in the regional government, and are included in the budget."
Non-oil revenues, including customs fees, in the Kurdistan Region amount to more than 300 billion dinars per month, according to the regional government. These are used by combining them with the 600 billion dinars that come from Baghdad monthly, for the purpose of distributing salaries amounting to more than 900 billion dinars per month.
The data indicates that there are more than 30 ports in Kurdistan, including 13 official ports, only 6 ports officially recognized by Baghdad, and only 7 ports recognized by the regional government, while there are about 20 other "illegal" crossings that are not even controlled by the regional government and smuggling is active in them.
