    Economy News - Baghdad
A Jordanian-Iraqi meeting held at the offices of the National Electricity Company yesterday, Saturday, discussed the progress of the electrical interconnection project between the two countries.
The meeting, which was chaired by the Director General of the Jordanian National Electric Power Company, Sufyan Al-Batayneh, and on the Iraqi side by the Director General of the General Electricity Transmission Company/Central Region, Riyad Aribi, in the presence of those concerned from both sides, discussed the progress of work on the Jordanian-Iraqi electrical interconnection project and the supply of 400 kV.
The Jordanian and Iraqi sides expect the project to be completed by the end of April 2025.
The two sides stressed the importance of extending the contract to supply the Iraqi side with electrical energy at a voltage of 132 kV, the contractual period of which will expire at the end of this September, and they agreed on the procedures required from both parties to complete the signing of the extension of the supply contract so that the period of this extension ends with the start of the supply at a voltage of 400 kV.
Within the framework of the electrical interconnection project, the Jordanian and Iraqi sides affirmed the permanent joint endeavor to enhance all forms of cooperation between the two countries in a way that serves the interests of the two peoples.
The two sides had signed a memorandum of understanding on December 29, 2018, between the Iraqi Ministry of Electricity and the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, with the aim of the two sides seeking to cooperate in the field of electricity and establish a synchronized electrical interconnection network between the two countries.
On September 27, 2020, a contract for the sale of electricity was signed between the Jordanian National Electric Power Company and the General Company for Energy Transmission/Central Region, to provide the Iraqi side with an electrical capacity ranging between 150-200 megawatts.
In addition to establishing a 400 KV overhead transmission line as a first phase linking the Risha transformer station on the Jordanian side and the Qaim transformer station on the Iraqi side, with a length of 6 km in Jordanian territory and 330 km in Iraqi territory.
