    Baghdad Today - Sulaymaniyah
Political analyst Luqman Hussein confirmed, today, Sunday (October 20, 2024), that it is known that the security services in the Kurdistan Region are exposed to pressures and most of their members are affiliated with the traditional ruling parties.
Hussein said in an interview with Baghdad Today, "It is natural that these parties obtain more than 90% of the voters' votes in the special ballot for the Kurdistan Regional Parliament elections."
He added, "The fact that independents and opposition parties obtained, according to preliminary results, about 30% of the votes in the special ballot that took place yesterday, represents an unexpected surprise, and this could be reflected on the general election day."
He pointed out that "the pressures on voters in the general election are few, and here lies the surprise with the new rise of independent parties and movements, and this may change the equation in Kurdistan."
84 independent candidates are competing in the parliamentary elections, which are scheduled to take place in the Kurdistan Region tomorrow, Sunday, October 20, amidst the intense electoral race between candidates of political parties and alliances .
The candidates who announced their participation independently in the current round of parliamentary elections in Kurdistan are running against a huge number of candidates from political parties and alliances, totaling 1,072 candidates, 949 of whom represent parties and 123 from political alliances, according to statistics from the Independent High Electoral Commission in Iraq, which is supervising the organization of elections in the region for the first time.
Since its establishment in 1992, the Kurdistan Region has witnessed five parliamentary sessions so far. Independent candidates participated in the first and second sessions of the parliamentary elections through two electoral lists, but they were unable to obtain any parliamentary seats in either session .
Observers believe that the presence of a large number of independent candidates gives the regional parliament elections a good and positive impression, and that independents have a chance of winning, but they are very small .
While major parties stand behind some independent candidates, and have presented them under the names of independents, the citizen in the Kurdistan Region, according to observers, knows the independent candidates and others affiliated with major parties, who will join the party bloc that supported them after winning the elections again.
Meanwhile, others believe that the fierce competition between party candidates in these elections and the lack of financial support for independents, especially women, makes their chances of winning weak.
