The Ministry of Transport has begun implementing a plan to modernize and expand the railway networks, while preparing to open the (Sawa-Hijama) line in the Middle Euphrates region.
The Director of the General Railways Company affiliated with the Ministry, Jabbar Lahees, told Al-Sabah: Most of the railway lines were destroyed and disappeared due to the terrorist acts that the country was exposed to in 2014, which prompted his ministry to begin reconstruction and development operations, and thus return them to work, similar to the (Baghdad-Ramadi) line, which was recently opened after its rehabilitation as part of a plan to rehabilitate all stopped lines and restart them.
He confirmed that the coming weeks will witness the opening of the (Sawa-Hijama) line in the Middle Euphrates region, in addition to the (Anbar-Qaim) line, in addition to organizing a broad campaign to rehabilitate the railway lines in the southern governorates with the aim of maintaining their operation, noting that his company is working on two axes to eliminate the violations that extend to thousands of kilometers on the railway lines in Baghdad and the governorates.
Lahees explained that the first axis is related to the judiciary and filing lawsuits against the violators, whether they are government institutions or individuals, while the second axis focuses on removing these violations directly by specialized committees accompanied by the railway police and some of the security forces holding the land, pointing out that work on the (Basra-Shalamcheh) project has currently reached the stage of removing mines and war remnants.
