SEOUL (Reuters) - Seoul is likely to propose North Korea this week to launch military negotiations to stop hostilities on the border between the two neighbors, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported.
The Defense Ministry and other relevant ministries are working to coordinate the new proposal, one day after Pyongyang's first positive response to an initiative by the South Korean president, Moon in Berlin on July 6, aimed at easing tension in the region.
North Korea's ruling Rodong Sinmun newspaper on Saturday expressed Pyongyang's satisfaction at the South Korean president's commitment to the two joint declarations signed in 2000 and 2007 aimed at launching border cooperation and initiating exchanges and reconciliation between the two neighboring sister countries.
Seoul is also preparing another initiative to hold negotiations through the Red Cross between the two countries to organize meetings between members of separated families in the two Koreas on the occasion of the harvest festival on October 4, the source said.
At the same time, some experts suggested that the deep differences between the two countries could emerge in the course of the expected negotiations.
