US President Donald Trump has been encouraging Iranians since Thursday to take part in protests against economic conditions in their country.
"Iran is failing at all levels despite the terrible deal by the previous Obama administration," Trump wrote on his official website on Twitter on Monday.
"The Iranian people have been suppressed for food and freedom for many years."
The US president called for the overthrow of the Iranian regime.
For his part, Iranian President Hassan Rowhani warned earlier in the day that the people would "respond to troublemakers and lawbreakers" who have been demonstrating for days in Iran.
"Our nation will deal with this minority, which is spreading slogans against the law and the will of the people, and harming the sanctities and values of the revolution," Rouhani said in a statement posted on his official website.
"Criticism and protests are an opportunity, not a threat, and the people will respond to troublemakers and lawbreakers themselves," he said. C
