China has banned trade in elephants' fangs in a move environmentalists have seen as vital to the rescue of endangered animals.

China, the world's largest importer of ivory, has cut consumption and trade of ivory since 2014, as demand has fallen due to public awareness campaigns, until the ban becomes effective at the start of the new year.

Wildlife protection groups estimate that nearly 30,000 villas are killed in Africa by fishermen each year. Ivory is used in the manufacture of artistic carvings and decorative parts and jewelry.

The Chinese ban did not include Hong Kong, which is the main center for ivory transport and trade in China. But the former British colony is waiting for a new vote on the ban on ivory in 2018.
