    Pope Francis reiterated his hope for an international status for Jerusalem and the resumption of dialogue between Israelis and Palestinians for a two-state solution in a letter to Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, a Vatican statement said Thursday.

    The Pope has repeatedly criticized President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. "A special situation guaranteed by the international community can only preserve its identity and its unique mission as a place for peace ... and its universal value, which allows for a future of reconciliation and hope for the entire region," he said.

    In a letter sent by the Pope on the occasion of the International Conference in support of Al-Azhar, Al-Azhar, the Pope reiterated "the need to resume dialogue between the Israelis and the Palestinians to reach a negotiated solution for the peaceful coexistence of the two countries within the borders agreed between them and recognized by the international community."

    Al-Azhar Grand Sheikh Ahmad al-Tayeb suggested during the conference that this year be allocated to be a year for Al-Quds Al-Sharif.

    "The decision of US President Donald Trump to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel must be met with new and serious Islamic and Arab thinking that respects the Arabism of Jerusalem and the sanctity of Islamic and Christian sanctities," Sheikh al-Azhar said in a speech to the Azhar World Conference in support of Jerusalem.

    "The countdown to the division of the region began to spread to the Zionist entity and to the establishment of the Zionist entity as a whole," he said.
