A senior US official said that during his visit to Baghdad and Erbil he had made progress in the talks between the two sides, noting that his country hopes to achieve more rapprochement to end the crisis between the two sides.
US Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan told reporters in Washington that he encouraged Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Abadi and Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government Nechirvan Barzani on the need to reach a practical formula to pay the salaries of employees and lifting the ban on international flights from airports in the Kurdistan Region.
Sullivan reiterated that the United States is committed to "a prosperous, united and democratic federal Iraq that meets the aspirations of all Iraqis."
He added that he raised this commitment also during his meeting with the President of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Najirvan Barzani and his deputy Qubad Talabani during his visit to Erbil.
He said the two sides had made "progress" in solving controversial issues, stressing the importance of continuing the dialogue.
"The impression I have during the talks is that both sides believe that progress is being made," Sullivan said.
Sullivan said his message to the two sides is to continue discussions and make progress on controversial issues, especially those where differences are small and thus easily resolved.
He stressed the importance of "increasing confidence between the two governments" so that they can move forward and resolve "major contentious issues".
