The US State Department said the United States had credible intelligence that Russia and the Syrian regime were trying to clear the site of the chemical attack in the eastern city of Douma in Damascus.

"We are confident that they are also trying to delay the arrival of inspectors from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to the site of the attack," ministry spokeswoman Heather Naort told a news conference.

"We have reliable information indicating that Russian officials are working with the Syrian regime to prevent and delay the arrival of these inspectors to Duma."

"The goal is to clear sites that have seen suspected attacks and to remove evidence that chemical weapons are being used," she said.

Several countries, including the United States, claim that the Syrian regime used chemical weapons in an attack on Duma on April 7, killing 78 people and injuring hundreds.

Last Saturday, Washington, Paris and London announced a triple strike on Syrian targets, in response to alleged chemical weapons use, in the Duma attack.
