The White House responded to Moscow's announcement that the upcoming Russian-US summit in mid-July would not address the issue of Crimea.
He stressed that the United States does not recognize the annexation of Russia and the Ukrainian peninsula and that US sanctions on Moscow remain until the last retreat from the step in 2014.
"We do not recognize Russia's attempt to annex the Crimea," US presidential spokeswoman Sarah Sanders told a news conference on Monday.
"The sanctions against Russia will remain until Russia returns the peninsula to Ukraine," she said.
The Kremlin said earlier on Monday that Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump could discuss "all issues" with the exception of the Crimea at their first official summit on July 16.
On Friday, Trump raised doubts about the US position on the Crimea issue when he did not rule out the possibility of recognizing Russia's annexation of the peninsula.
The Trump administration imposed sanctions on "rich governors" close to the Russian president, especially because of Moscow's "attacks" on "Western democracies."
In early 2014, following the sinking of regions in Ukraine in the wake of a popular uprising in Kiev that toppled the pro-Russian president, Russian troops in unarmed military uniforms took control of the Crimea.
A referendum on the peninsula, a predominantly Russian-speaking city, was officially announced on March 18, 2014, and officially opened the bridge between the Crimea and his country.
