Washington Post: Trump Management Is Considering Classifying The Houthis As A Terrorist Group

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The administration of President Donald Trump is considering the classification of Yemen's Houthi militia as a terrorist organization, according to people familiar with the discussions as part of a campaign to end the country's war and press Iran against the Huthi ally.

The terrorist classification, which will inject a new and unpredictable element into diplomatic efforts to start peace talks, has been sporadically discussed since 2015, the sources said, but it has been re-examined in recent months as the White House sought to adopt a tough stance from groups Which are linked to Iran in the Middle East.

The US State Department's classification of the Houthis as an official terrorist group would further isolate the rebels, but some warn that the crisis could worsen the dire humanitarian situation in Yemen without reaching an end to the conflict.

The sources, who declined to be named, said the administration was considering a range of possible moves, including lighter measures to punish the coup, but said no decision had yet been made. It was not immediately clear how advanced the deliberations on terrorist classification were conducted by the US State Department.
