Abdul Mahdi continues to negotiate to prevent opposition to his government

The leader of the Alliance for Reform and Reconstruction, Ethel Nujaifi, said on Monday that Prime Minister Adel Abdul Mahdi is still engaged in political negotiations so that the coalition does not go to the option of opposition.
Al-Nujaifi told Asharq Al-Awsat that "going to the opposition depends not only on the political forces, but also on the behavior of the government and what the government will provide so that political parties do not go to the opposition."
"But before there was a response from Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi that he was ready to meet all our reformist demands in order to win those forces and not to go to the opposition," he said.
"The goal is not to sit in the opposition and criticize the government, the goal is to achieve reform, if the government's response to achieve reform as promised by Abdul Mahdi, we will not go to the opposition," said the leader of the Alliance for Reform and Reconstruction.
"The commissioners are still among the reform and reconstruction coalition in general and Prime Minister Adel Abdel Mahdi for major reform measures, otherwise we will be in the opposition," Nujaifi said.
The coalition includes a number of Shiite and Sunni political forces that won the May 2018 elections but the coalition failed to win the post of prime minister despite attempts to keep former prime minister Haider al-Abbadi in office for a second term.
The governments elected after 2003 and now in Iraq have not seen any opposition within the House of Representatives, and most of the executive authorities have been a consensual coalition of forces that tops the political scene.
