TEHRAN - Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Zarif said on Monday that Tehran welcomed Russia's initiative on security in the Gulf region.
During a joint press conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Moscow, Zarif reiterated Tehran's readiness to sign a non-offensive treaty with its Gulf neighbors.
"As far as security in the Gulf is concerned, our views with Russia are very close. I think security can be ensured through cooperation, not confrontation," Zarif said.
"We welcome this initiative but we are also ready to sign an agreement, a non-aggression treaty with the Gulf neighbors. So the concept of Russia is very close to our view, and we welcome our Russian friends and encourage them to move forward on this issue."
