Washington Announces a Diplomatic Reduction of its Personnel in Baghdad and Erbil (Document)

The American Foreign Policy magazine revealed on Wednesday that the US State Department sent a document to Congress that includes detailed plans to significantly and permanently reduce the number of employees and diplomats in Iraq.
The magazine stated in a report that this measure, according to critics, directly contradicts the declared goals of the Trump administration in what he called "countering Iranian influence" in the country and undermines Washington's efforts to stabilize the Iraqi government. "
He added that "the documents sent from the Foreign Ministry to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee highlight the number of employees and diplomats to be reduced and the numbers that will remain in Iraq as the document indicated that the American mission in Iraq will reduce the number of employees in its embassy, diplomatic support center, and consulate In Arbil, in northern Iraq, from 486 individuals to 349 individuals, a decrease of 28 per cent, by the end of May 2020.

He continued, "The US State Department insists in the documents that I sent to Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman James Rich, a Republican from Idaho, that the new staffing levels will allow the Iraq mission to continue to achieve its primary goals, and to do adequate oversight and oversight of the programs."
