The Minister of Water Resources, Mahdi Rashid, announced, on Saturday, that the ministry has taken several measures to address the water scarcity in the Nahrawan region, while noting that he directed an increase in releases on the Khalis River to secure drinking water.
Rashid said in a statement to the official channel, which was reviewed by "Al-Iqtisad News", that he "directed to increase water releases on the Khalis River from the water reservoir to address the shortage in the waters of the Nahrawan region," noting that "the Minister of Construction and Housing, during the last meeting of the Council of Ministers, demanded the implementation of a water project." Central Nahrawan, which has been lagging for 10 years and is 75% done.
Rasheed added that "the ministry is following up the process of lifting abuses on the Diyala River, which greatly affected the reduction of water levels reaching Baghdad, while emphasizing the need to find solutions to treat the sewage that is thrown into the Diyala River, which greatly harms public health and the environment," noting that "Despite the lack of water revenues from neighboring Iran and the drop in levels significantly this summer, the ministry took bold decisions to address this issue by increasing releases from the existing stock to secure the citizen's need for drinking water."
He stressed that "the issue of water in Nahrawan will be resolved within days and has been addressed and will not be repeated if everyone cooperates."
