Baghdad calls on the international community to intervene to ensure that Iraq obtains its water rights
Shafaq News/ On Saturday, Minister of Water Resources Mahdi Rashid Al-Hamdani called on the international community to support Iraq to ensure that it obtains its water rights from riparian countries.
This came within the activities of the (Mediterranean Dialogues Forum 2021), in which the Minister participated.
During his hosting on the sidelines of the forum, Al-Hamdani stressed the need to confront the challenges of climate change and its negative effects on water resources, represented by the increasing periods of drought, the spread of desertification, high temperatures and lack of rain, with the increasing demand for energy and population growth, which necessitates the riparian countries to share the damage in difficult periods and to build bridges Cooperating, exchanging data, and reaching binding international understandings and agreements within the framework of international law and norms to guarantee the rights of countries, especially those located in estuaries, to ensure their access to water.
He pointed to the importance of the role of the international community to support Iraq to obtain its water rights in light of the mentioned challenges and the achievement of sustainable development goals in light of the interrelationship between water, food and energy.
The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (Mediterranean Dialogues Forum) is organizing jointly with the Italian Institute for International Policy Studies (ISPI) in Rome.
The forum deals with the modernization and development of approaches and means to confront the challenges and modern global changes, regionally and globally, such as the increase in demand for energy and climatic changes in light of the limited natural resources.
The forum constitutes a platform for dialogue for leaders, decision-makers, academics, institutions, the media and the business sector to discuss and exchange opinions and information to reach greater understandings regarding cooperation, building international partnerships, and supporting the economy to provide prosperity for peoples.
