On Thursday, the Director of Media for the Elections Commission in the Kurdistan Region, Shorsh Hassan, confirmed that the commission addressed the region's parliament regarding the current term and the renewal of its work.
"We have not received any official answer from the Presidency of the Kurdistan Region Parliament, and we are waiting for an answer regarding extending the legal period, or choosing a new body, before holding the elections," Hassan said in an interview with the Information Agency.
He added that "technically, we are ready to hold elections, but regarding the appointment of a new commission or a new law, this matter concerns the regional parliament exclusively."
The Kurdish parties, with the exception of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, refuse to hold elections for the regional parliament without choosing a new commission and changing the current law, with the law of multiple districts.
The President of the Kurdistan Region, Nechirvan Barzani, set the first of next October as the date for holding the elections of the Kurdistan Region Parliament
