Nasiriyah: Massive protests in front of official departments to demand job opportunities

Dhi Qar / Hussein Al-Amil
Hundreds of angry graduates closed the Dhi Qar Oil Company and the Education Directorate, in a new escalation of the demand activities calling for job opportunities for the unemployed.
An official source in the Dhi Qar Oil Company said in an interview with Al-Mada that "the sit-in graduates have returned to close the Dhi Qar Oil Company and prevent its affiliates from starting work."
The source added, "The demonstrators closed the main doors and burned a number of tires in front of the company's entrance."
He pointed out, "The company's employees have returned to their homes and will continue the administrative work, whether from their homes or through alternative sites," but he spoke about "the inability to accommodate affiliates, whose number is estimated at more than a thousand people, in alternative sites, because these sites lack the appropriate infrastructure for work." .
The source denied that “the closure of the company came in response to the bulldozing of the sit-in’s tents earlier,” noting that “the protesters had previously suspended their sit-in during the month of Ramadan and returned to their protest activities after that.”
Last month, a force of the army razed the sit-in tents of the graduates who protested in front of the Dhi Qar Oil Company, who are demanding appointment within the departments and institutions of the Ministry of Oil in the province.
The protesting graduates believe that the closure of the Dhi Qar Oil Company came due to ignoring their demands and not dealing with their legitimate rights to work.
One of the protesting engineers told Al-Mada that "the demands of the graduates are to include the degrees of their appointment in the current year's budget."
He added, "Most of the protesting graduates have been graduating for years, and some of them have higher degrees, in addition to technical specializations and others from management, economics and media."
In a previous interview with Al-Mada, Alaa Muhammad Al-Hadidi, the media official for the sit-in at the Dhi Qar Oil Company, said that “the concerned authorities have not met with the protesters and have not negotiated with them so far. That is why they continue to sit and close the company by peaceful means until their demands are achieved.”
On the other hand, hundreds of graduates who are not lecturers closed the Dhi Qar Education Directorate for the second day in a row, demanding appointments similar to the lecturers who were contracted last year.
An official source in the Dhi Qar Education Directorate told Al-Mada that "more than 300 non-lecturer graduates closed the Dhi Qar Education Directorate for the second day to demand that they be included in the lecturers' contracts."
And the source added, "The decision regarding their appointment is not a local prerogative, but rather is related to obtaining the approvals of the prime minister."
And he finds, "The problem of graduates who are not lecturers is solvable, as there are more than 800 job grades that were allocated to Dhi Qar Governorate within the first round of free lecturers' contracts."
The source pointed out that “these degrees were not reviewed by anyone, or those covered by them did not express their unwillingness to be appointed; due to their association with work contracts in other institutions and departments.”
And he spoke, about "the possibility of addressing the prime minister by the local government or the representatives of the province about the matter, since the financial allocations are allocated for degrees."
The source added, "The Education Directorate has already transferred more than 26,000 free lecturers to contracts during 2021, according to ministerial regulations."
The coordinators of the sit-in in Nasiriyah, including graduates of oil, media, engineering, technical institutes and others, had called at the beginning of May for the renewal of demonstrations in front of the Dhi Qar governorate building to demand appointment in government institutions.
Demonstrators demanding appointments in Dhi Qar often resort to a sit-in in front of government departments and institutions and sometimes close a number of roads, bridges, and vital institutions such as oil and production companies and decision-making departments in order to pressure and expedite the implementation of their demands.
Dhi Qar Governorate, which has a population of more than two million people and includes 22 administrative units, 10 of which are adjacent to the marsh areas, faces a growing problem of high unemployment rates, especially among graduates, as unemployment rates are estimated at more than 40 percent among this segment, while residential areas and neighborhoods suffer from a shortage Severe basic services and the deterioration and obsolescence of infrastructure.
