Today, Wednesday, the Ministry of Environment identified four causes of air pollution in Iraq, while announcing its endeavor to issue legislation in line with the Paris Agreement.
The director general of the technical department in the ministry, Issa al-Fayyad, said, "Air pollution in Iraq is due to several reasons, including: the oil provinces contain a high pollution rate as a result of extraction operations," noting that "the Ministry of Oil has investment projects for associated gas, and thus it will significantly reduce pollution." ".
Al-Fayyad added, "The other reason for pollution is the large number of cars in the country, as Iraq lacks mass transportation, in addition to the lack of high use of electric cars (hybrid), in addition to the lack of commitment of some factories and factories that are close to cities, as well as the encroachment of cities." near factory sites.
He continued: "The most prominent reason is the existence of a defect in the environment law, as the law did not address the issue of environmental load, and did not yet specify the distance between one plant and another, so we find many laboratories close to each other."
He pointed out that "the ministry is trying to change the legislation, and is working to include legislation that is compatible with the Paris Agreement on climate change," stressing that "the Iraqi government is serious about the issue of confronting climate change."
