Shafaq News/ The Iraqi Prime Minister, Muhammad Shia'a Al-Sudani affirmed, on Saturday, his government's commitment to protecting public freedoms and paying attention to human rights issues, noting that Iraq has become "a fertile arena available for civil society work."

In a statement received by Shafaq News agency, Al-Sudani said, "International Human Rights Day is an occasion in which we renew the commitment of the government of Iraq to what came in our government program of protecting public freedoms and caring for human rights issues."
He added, "We reaffirm our endeavor to rehabilitate ways to adhere to the international agreements that Iraq has signed, to deal responsibly and transparently with this file as a fundamental and central issue, and to make the necessary efforts in order to spread a culture of human rights in society."
Al-Sudani continued, "As we remember and celebrate this day, we prepare it as a reminder of the status of human rights throughout the year, in every policy, work, or government direction, and at all levels, which represents our pursuit of the ultimate goal of preserving the dignity of the Iraqi person, and upholding it in all aspects of life."
And the Prime Minister considered that "the application of human rights standards has become, since 2003 until the present day, a criterion for building institutions and adopting national legislation and policies, in a manner consistent with the implementation of what was stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the relevant international norms and covenants."
Al-Sudani stated that "the Iraqi government's measures in combating extremism and renouncing violence, ensuring peaceful coexistence among all components of the people, combating corruption and maintaining security, ensuring the provision of services to citizens, and reducing violations, in their entirety, represent a true understanding of the importance of human rights issues," pointing out that " The promotion and protection of human rights is the responsibility of everyone without exception, in an integrated process that includes all agencies, whether in the government, the judiciary, the House of Representatives, or national institutions and civil society.
"Today, Iraq has become a fertile arena for the work of civil society, activists and human rights defenders, and this is the result of change and the adoption of a true understanding of human rights standards," the Prime Minister said.
Human Rights Day is celebrated annually on December 10, to commemorate the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948.
The Declaration consists of a preamble and 30 articles that define a wide range of human rights and fundamental freedoms that everyone in the world is entitled to enjoy. The Declaration guarantees rights without any discrimination based on nationality, place of residence, gender, national or ethnic origin, religion, language or other status.
The Declaration was drawn up by representatives of all regions and legal traditions, and over the years it has been accepted as a contract between governments and their people. Almost all countries accepted it. Since then, it has formed the basis of an expanded system aimed at protecting human rights, and today it also focuses on vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and migrants. Available in more than 500 languages, the Declaration is the most widely translated document in the world.
