Launching the “National Platform for Child Data”

Yesterday, Thursday, the concerned official state authorities, activists, and United Nations representatives celebrated the Iraqi Child Day, which falls on July 13 of each year. This year's celebration coincided with the launch of the "National Platform for Child Data" sponsored by the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Planning The government is also seeking to pass the "Child Protection" law, which is currently being discussed by specialized committees in the House of Representatives.
The Minister of Labor and Social Affairs, Ahmed Al-Asadi, said during the launching ceremony of the “National Platform for Child Data” on the occasion of the Iraqi Child Day, which was attended by “Al-Sabah”: “The size of the crises that Iraq has gone through over the past decades and the resulting repercussions cast a shadow on society, especially children. And today, Iraq is embarking on a new phase of reconstruction and construction, as the government has placed among its priorities attention to the human rights file.
He added, "The government approved the National Strategy for Early Childhood Development, which included a package of programs and projects for the benefit of the age group under eight years of age, which international studies have proven to be the most important stage of a person's life and in which the basic capabilities are formed that enable the child to grow properly," stressing, " The government's endeavor to approve the child protection bill, which is currently being discussed by the specialized committees in the House of Representatives.
Al-Asadi explained, "The launch of the national platform for child data as part of the procedures of the national child protection policy, is being worked on in coordination with the Ministry of Planning represented by the Central Statistical Organization and the Department of Human Development, and the support of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)," noting that "the platform will provide data And statistics and surveys on the situation of children in Iraq and in various sectors, to be an official source for policy-makers, researchers and those interested in their rights.
For his part, Head of the Central Bureau of Statistics, Dr. Diaa Awad, said: "The national platform for child data is the first of its kind that is concerned with following up data on childhood in all its stages and details by feeding it through the channels of national and international partners."
He added, during his speech delivered on behalf of the Minister of Planning, that "the launch of this platform comes in the context of a comprehensive and coordinated approach to building and developing children in Iraq, who are still facing many problems that have made them lose many of the requirements for a decent life." The segments of the population were affected by the security, economic, social and health challenges the country faced, which had negative repercussions on the public scene.
He continued, "The launch of the national platform coincides with the launch of the National Document for Population Policy in Iraq, which included a basic axis of childhood among its eleven axes in terms of rights and protection, and it included an important package of goals and procedures through which it is possible to adopt work to direct state policies." with all its aspects towards the development of childhood and launching a process of sound construction for this segment, which represents almost half of society, leading to ensuring education, health and well-being, and eliminating violence targeting children.
As for the representative of the United Nations Children's Fund in Iraq, Masha San Gupta, she indicated that she had witnessed clear progress in the lives of children in Iraq during the past two years, and said regarding the national platform: "We have to understand the nature of the problems through comprehensive data that is accessible and understandable and that addresses these problems." The challenges and the platform will be one of the big variables."
For its part, the Women and Childhood Committee welcomed the Ministry of Labor's move to launch the first platform for children's data, and to act as a motive for the adoption of the "Child Protection" law.
The head of the committee, Donia Al-Shammari, said, in an interview with "Al-Sabah": "This platform will count the number of children who are from (the age of one day to the age of 18 years), which helps the ministry in its work," noting that "there is a percentage of the number of children in relation to the total The population, which is approximately 45% of the percentage of Iraqi citizens.
And she added, "The committee is determined to pass the Child Protection Law, but not the current law in Parliament. Rather, the committee will amend it and will read it again as soon as possible during this legislative term," noting that "there are many things that will be amended in Law, which are deep and important issues."
