The Ministry of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities prepared a strategy to reduce the impact of water scarcity in the country and reduce the wastage of potable water, which amounts to 60 percent. To determine fixed water shares.
The Minister of Construction, Housing and Public Municipalities, Benkin Rikani, said in his speech at the first national conference for safe water management in the country yesterday, which was attended by "Al-Sabah": The water crisis in the country is almost a real threat to food and environmental security alike, pointing out that the ministry's strategies have taken Considering all the challenges facing the water sector, the most important of which is the problem of networks, as most of them are old and dilapidated, while some of them date back to decades ago, indicating that they are no longer suitable for work according to the specifications currently approved in the aforementioned sector.
And he warned that there are dilapidated networks that may lead to the leakage of quantities of water that threaten entire cities with collapse, especially the Salah al-Din governorate, which is now facing a real danger in this field, warning in the same context that the percentage of waste in potable water amounts to 60 percent due to the dilapidated networks. Many citizens, including farmers, have violated it, explaining that his ministry has adopted a strategy in this regard that includes preparing a master plan for sewage treatment plants to ensure that the outputs of these networks are used for other purposes, especially agriculture.
The minister stated that his ministry is working to reconsider the issue of collecting water money, as it ensures continuous maintenance and helps rationalize consumption, revealing at the same time the trend to implement the water sector automation project through the installation of new meters.
In addition, the Minister of Water Resources, Aoun Diab, explained in his speech during the conference that the country suffers from water scarcity for the fourth year in a row, attributing the reason to the policy of the source countries and climate changes, indicating that his ministry is working on preparing a plan to enhance the concept of water governance in coordination with all agencies and sectors. , to ensure the delivery of water rations to all beneficiaries, especially the southern governorates that face the danger of migration from the marsh areas.
He added that the ministry, with the support of the prime minister, seeks to reach a fixed water share for the country, especially after reaching agreements with neighboring countries during the third Baghdad International Water Conference, which would pave the way for strengthening water relations.
