The German government announced its intention to extend the German army's mission in Iraq, while considering sending 500 new soldiers.
According to the official German agency “DPA”, the extension of the army’s tasks aims to “spread stability in Iraq for another year”, and thus Berlin will have the possibility of sending no more than 500 members of the army to Iraq to carry out this mission.
Following the weekly session of the German Council of Ministers, German government spokesman Steffen Heibstreit said, “The assignment primarily includes advice and also includes providing support in air refueling, air transport support, and participation in reconnaissance missions carried out by NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) with AWACS aircraft.”
Hepstrait announced that the text of the mandate would be referred to Parliament.
It is noteworthy that the current mandate continues until the thirty-first of next October. Berlin also aims to support allies and partners in Iraq in combating ISIS.
