Today, Wednesday, the Parliamentary Higher Education Committee announced a move to amend the law on certificates and university service, while indicating the preparation of a new version of the private education law.

Committee member Adel Al-Rikabi said in a press interview: “The Parliamentary Higher Education Committee exercises its legislative role, as well as its supervisory role, from its position of responsibility and tasks, in accordance with the internal regulations of the House of Representatives.”

Al-Rikabi added, “A subcommittee formed in the committee whose main mission is to reconsider some basic laws that concern the Ministry of Higher Education, including the laws that were voted on in Parliament, including the law to reconsider the distributed percentages of profits generated from legal and consulting offices associated with universities.” Pointing out that “there are important amendments made to some laws that were received from the government, and they were discussed in the committee, in addition to making some important amendments to Law No. 40 of 1988, but the failure to hold sessions delayed voting on them.”

Al-Rikabi continued, “The committee set important terms and conditions for restructuring universities, in addition to selecting university leaders and the duration of their tenure in university positions. There is also a new version of the Private Education Law, which is different from Law No. 25 of 2016, and it is now in the process of being put forward for the first reading during Upcoming sessions.

The committee member revealed, “There is an amendment to the Degrees Law, as well as the University Service Law, which included many privileges for professors and teaching staff at universities, including increasing the retirement age for university professors with the rank of professor and assistant professor, which set the ages from 68 to 70 years.”

Al-Rikabi confirmed that “workshops will be held to discuss the certificates law,” pointing out that “there are many other laws and regulations that need to be amended.”

He stated that "the committee has made many field visits, to private and government universities, to follow up on the reality of education there.
