Closing 3,000 overflowing fish lakes

The Ministry of Water Resources intends to complete the closure of about three thousand unlicensed fish lakes early next year, due to the lack of water imports and the lack of use of modern methods of breeding.
The Vice-Chairman of the Agriculture, Water and Marshes Committee in the House of Representatives, Zozan Ali Saleh, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The Ministries of Water Resources and Agriculture agreed to close all the bypassing lakes, as a result of the circumstances that Iraq is going through due to the lack of water imports reaching it and the change in climate and high temperatures.
Saleh added, "Closing the unpermitted lakes will allow for optimal use of water and manage it in a thoughtful and equitable manner among the governorates. It will also enable the country to overcome the critical stage under the current circumstances."
She pointed out that "the number of approved fish lakes reaches two thousand, compared to three thousand lakes that exceed them, with two thousand lakes on the Tigris River, and more than 700 lakes on the Euphrates River distributed among different regions."
The representative called for "the need for fish breeders to use modern methods of breeding, including the closed system, which saves a lot of water without wasting, in addition to following alternative solutions in the future to support this important wealth and the breeders of this product, which is an essential meal consumed by the citizen."
At the same time, she called on the government to "support breeders to reduce the cost of the project by providing all requirements and needs for breeders to raise the economic level of this important group."
