On the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Summit (COP28), the President of the Republic, Dr. Abdul Latif Jamal Rashid, met today, Friday, December 1, 2023 in Dubai, with the Secretary-General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Jens Stollenberg.
During the meeting, which was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Minister of Environment, Nizar Amedi, the overall security and political situation on the international scene was reviewed, and what was discussed at the Climate Conference (COP 28), where the President of the Republic stressed that climate changes represent a threat to global security and stability, noting the importance of Strengthening communication and expanding the horizons of cooperation among everyone to confront these risks.
The President of the Republic explained the measures that Iraq is following through the Ministry of Environment and the rest of the relevant ministries, formations and government departments to reduce the negative effects of climate change, combat drought and water scarcity, and combat desertification.
The President of the Republic also affirmed Iraq's firm position on the Palestinian issue and its denunciation of the violent attacks against defenseless civilians, pointing out the necessity of taking a clear and frank international position against the violations committed against the Palestinian people and granting them the right to self-determination.
For his part, the Secretary-General of NATO praised the distinguished Iraqi role in fighting terrorism, consolidating the foundations of peace in the region, and establishing security and stability in Iraq.
