The Ministry of Commerce said yesterday, Saturday, that wheat storage will meet the local need until the next harvest season in 2024, while indicating that wheat storage is secure from external factors.
The ministry’s spokesman, Muthanna Jabbar, told the Iraqi News Agency (INA): “The strategic reserve of wheat will cover the food basket rations, and will meet the needs of citizens until the beginning of the next harvest season, that is, during the period limited to the end of April in the year 2024 and the beginning of September.” ».
He stressed that “the current strategic storage of wheat amounts to more than two million tons, and is covered by regular warehouses, which are metal and concrete silos, in addition to covered trusses and bunkers, which are concrete yards covered with plastic sheets (yards).”
He pointed out that “the operations of fogging, rehabilitating and preserving the warehouses are continuing,” stressing that “Iraq will not need to import wheat, and if there is a need to import, it is for mixing purposes only, to produce a type of flour with a high gluten level that achieves the vertical grilling (tannour bread) that it is accustomed to.” "The Iraqis."
