    Baghdad today - Baghdad
Today, Tuesday (December 19, 2023), Member of Parliament Hussein Habib proposed an alternative to the biometric device system in the Iraqi elections, while noting that it robbed the will of thousands of voters.
Habib said in an interview with “Baghdad Today” that “ The repeated errors in public and private voting for provincial councils unfortunately sent negative messages to Iraqi public opinion and had a serious impact, especially since they related to the fate and will of voters and led to a real state of anxiety.”
He added, " Many citizens lost the ability to participate in the elections due to not updating their biometric cards or not possessing them, despite the presence of the rest of the other official documents, such as a national identity and a passport, which contributed to reducing participation rates, although some of them tried hard to update the cards, but they collided with other complications of the Commission.”
Habib pointed out, “ The complications of the electoral process are many, starting with the malfunction of some devices, the delay in sending data, the inability of many to update their cards, and the failure to deliver them in a timely manner, and all of these factors had a direct impact on turnout rates, pointing out that the repeated errors that have occurred since 2010 until now are considered a " 'disaster' From our point of view.”
The representative continued, “ Behind every electoral cycle, the Iraqi situation is charged and tense, accompanied by skepticism about the electoral process due to repeated errors, and this has a dangerous dimension to security and peace.”
Habib stressed the necessity of finding an alternative method away from the biometric card through the unified card with the voter’s fingerprint read, as happens in all other electoral experiments, including the American ones, for example, because it is not reasonable to rob the will of any Iraqi to vote because he does not have a biometric card or because he did not vote. By updating it even though it is not an essential card in public life, unlike the passport, the unified card, and the rest of the other documents.”
Yesterday evening, Monday, the general voting process for the local elections in Baghdad and the governorates, which had begun at seven o’clock in the morning of the same day, ended.
According to the Election Commission, “ The preliminary results of the voting process will be announced today, Tuesday. Then there will be a legal period for submitting appeals and complaints, and then the Commission will investigate the procedures and decisions of the judicial body related to the elections, and after their completion, the final results will be officially announced.
For his part, the Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, announced yesterday, Monday, that the elections took place without any security breach, stressing that the plan for the elections was characterized by high flexibility.
