Representatives of Basra Governorate directed strong criticism after the wave of emissions from oil fields increased and the salinity levels in the water increased significantly during the recent period, which places the governorate as the largest victim of the drought that has struck the country for more than three years.
The salinity level often rises in the summer due to the water scarcity that Iraq has been witnessing for years due to drought and the decline in water releases.
A member of the Parliamentary Water and Marshlands Committee, Thaer al-Jubouri, said in an interview with “Al-Sabah”: “The rise of the local tongue occurs as a result of the decline of the water that comes to the Shatt al-Arab through the Tigris, Euphrates, and Karun rivers, and these rivers are currently suffering from an interruption in their water releases and a significant decline in their waters.” ".
Al-Jubouri added, "The government bears responsibility for negotiating with Turkey and Iran," calling for "special negotiations with Iran regarding the Karun River, which has become a drain that pours salty water into the Shatt al-Arab."
He continued, "It is not possible to treat and alleviate the salt tongue without increasing water releases, which is the only thing capable of stopping its spread in Basra."
Meanwhile, water expert Tahseen al-Moussawi said that “the water issue has not received the priority it deserves until now, despite the presence of almost empty water tanks,” pointing out that “the rise in the salt landscape in Basra has a number of reasons, the most prominent of which is cutting off the flow of the Euphrates River and relying on the Tigris River, which suffers from water problems.” Few releases over the course of four years.”
Al-Moussawi told Al-Sabah: “The Euphrates was fed from the Tharthar reservoir and through floating pumps. These solutions, in their current form, are considered patchwork and far from plans.”
